Monster Drainage Limited clears blocked drains in Wimbledon for homeowners, landlords and businesses across SW19. Whether it is a kitchen sink backing up in a terraced house, a gully overflowing outside a block of flats or a drain that keeps slowing down in an older villa, our engineers find the cause and get the water moving. We work 24/7, so you do not have to wait for office hours when a drain fails.
A large share of homes in Wimbledon date from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Their drains were usually laid in salt glazed clay pipe, in short lengths joined one to the next. The clay itself lasts well, but the joints are the weak point. Over many decades they can crack, shift or lose their seal, and once there is a gap, roots and debris have somewhere to collect.
Many of these houses have also been extended or split into flats, so the original drain may now carry far more than it was built for. When a blocked drain keeps coming back in an older house, we often suggest a CCTV survey so you can see the pipe for yourself.
We start by lifting the inspection chamber covers to see where the water is standing, which tells us roughly where the blockage sits. Then we clear it with drain rods or high pressure water jetting, depending on the cause and the condition of the pipe. Once the run is clear we flush it through and check that every connected sink, bath and toilet drains freely.
Wimbledon Village, up on the hill, was designated a conservation area in 1968. Below it, the slopes above Worple Road are on London Clay, while the higher ground to the north is gravel.
Clay moves as it dries out in summer and wets again in winter, and that slow movement puts strain on old pipe joints. Drains laid in clay are more likely to develop small misalignments that snag debris, which is one reason the same drain can block again a few months after it was cleared.
Between Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon Park and the tree lined residential roads, this is a leafy part of London. Tree roots go looking for water, and a weeping joint in a clay drain is an easy source. Fine roots grow through the gap, thicken over time and form a mat that catches everything passing through.
Autumn adds leaves, which wash into open gullies. We clear the blockage and the debris caught with it, and a camera survey afterwards shows whether roots are still getting in and whether the pipe needs repair.
Blocked drains are only part of what we do. These pages explain our other services in more detail:
In a house split into flats, several homes often drain into one shared pipe. A blockage in that pipe can show up first in the ground floor flat, even when the waste causing it came from upstairs. We work with residents and landlords to find where the problem is and clear it, and we explain what we found in a way you can pass on to the others in the building.
In a typical Victorian terrace the drain leaves the back of the house, runs beneath the side return or hallway and heads under the front garden to the sewer in the road. The inspection chamber is often hidden under a front path or a planter. If you cannot find a cover, a camera survey can help show where the run goes, which saves time when the next blockage comes along.
If you are just outside SW19, we also cover Sutton and Cheam to the south, Worcester Park to the south west and Surbiton further west.
